English:

Congratulations with your new piercing!

To make sure your piercing will heal as smoothly as possible it’s important you follow the aftercare provided below.

The main reason of infection is touching the piercing or twisting it, so don’t move the piercing and leave it alone as much as possible. Wash your hands before starting the aftercare of your piercing, never remove the piercing during the healing period and aftercare.

The healing:

The healing process differs from person to person, and where they are placed, for example if they go trough cartilage or soft tissue, and how much friction they get during sleep and other causes. The bare minimum healing periods for the different piercings are:

-eyebrow and nose-brigde: 8 weeks

-nostril and cartilage ears: 12 weeks

-septum, earlobe and lip: 6 weeks

tongue: 4 weeks

cheeks and industrial: 16 weeks

Downsizing:

To prevent irritations on your new piercing like moisture bumps and irritation bumps and migration, it’s necesssary to downsize your piercing after the initial swelling. This can differ from person to person and the placement of your new piercing. For cartilage piercings and soft tissue piercings this is a minimum of 6 weeks, for oral piercings this is 4 weeks.

Aftercare:

You got a small bottle from your piercer containing an antibacterial solution. During the daily shower, rinse off the piercing with clean water and after the shower you drop some of the antibacterial drops on the piercing ( remember to not touch the piercing or twist it). Do this for at least 4 weeks once a day. After the four weeks, you can stop with the drops but keep rinsing the piercing daily with water.

Initial Jewellery:

Your new piercing is done with a sterilized jewel, made from implant grade titanium with a titanium end or 18 kt gold. This is either an internally threaded jewel or a push fit system. With the threaded jewelry you need to unscrew the jewel, the push-fit system requires to pull apart the end from the labret ( stem of piercing).

Do’s and don’ts:

-Never use alcohol bases products, hydrogen peroxide, ether or any other aggressive product on the piercing. These will stop the healing process and will irritate them more than do good for your healing process.

-Never use a vaseline based or oil based product on your healing piercing. They will block the oxygen flow to your piercing and set back your healing process, also they will make dirt and dust stick to the pierced area, which is a cause of irritation and possible infections.

-Do not go swimming, solariums and sauna’s for at least one month after getting pierced.

-Do not touch! The metal can’t get stuck to the skin. By touching of twisting the piercing, you will tear open the membrane that is forming as part of the healing and keep the wound from closing.

-Do not remove the jewel in case of an infection, this will result the piercing channel to close and close the infection and can result in an abscess.

Tips and Hints:

-Watch out with make-up, hairspray or other sprays and cremes around the pierced area as they can cause irritations.

-Try to sleep as much as possible on the other side of the ear with cartilage piercings, to reduce chance of irritation bumps.

-Refresh your pillow cases and bed sheets.

-Watch out with hair, these can get caught in your piercing.

-Watch out whilst brushing your hair with a comb, these can hurt or damage your healing piercing.

-Rinse your piercing with water after washing your hair.

Oral piercings:

The inside of the mouth is a part that heal relatively quick and does not need an abundance of aftercare. Usually it suffices that you use the given mouthwash diluted to 50/50 or another mouthwash ( without alcohol). After every cigarette or meal rinse the mouth with clean water.

Oral swelling:

Of all the oral piercings the one with the most swelling are tongues. The swelling usually occurs the morning after the placement. In the morning your swelling is always significantly larger than in the evening. During this period the piercing might feel sore or uncomfortable, you can use a painkiller like ibuprofen to counter this. Do not drink alcohol for 3 days after the placement.
